Dress Shirts: Baggy vs. Normal Fit

Yes, it matters.

By Janine Giorgenti

True story.

The other day, a client wanted to know if it was okay to wear over-sized dress shirts. He expressed concerns about wearing well fitting shirts due to his heavy set frame, telling me that he thought it would be too “revealing”. His disposition was to feel more comfortable being in a “baggy fitting” shirt. He asked me what I thought.

What do I think?

Here’s what I think.

Sure! By all means, continue to wear baggy fitting dress shirts, if you plan on going parachuting with them!

Okay now back to Earth (see what I did there?).

Listen, when it comes to dress shirts or casual button down shirts; you want a shirt that is normal fitting. Many times, it is tempting to believe that a baggy shirt may “hide” any self-perceived physical imperfections. That is simply not true. A baggy dress shirt, by default, is putting you at a disadvantage; given the extra material that you now have to compensate for. More material adds to a “bulkier” look, which will invariably add to your physical frame.

A good custom shirt will complement your frame, no matter your body shape or type.

Ultimately, your clothing ensemble should flatter your body and your overall image. Well fitting clothes give off the image of a self-aware dresser, which – like well groomed facial hair – gives you the the appearance of someone who is on top of their game.
