Sport Jackets: What you need to know.

An Essential Element for your Wardrobe

By Janine Giorgenti

The sport coat and blazer are essential pieces in a man’s wardrobe. They can be dressed up with a shirt and tie coupled with dress slacks, or dressed down with a casual shirt and chinos or jeans.

Sport jackets and blazers are a great way to add polish to your weekend wear or business casual outfits.

With so many color, fabric and style options, how do you choose the right sport coat or blazer?

Here are a few tips:

A Sport Coat vs. a Suit Coat.

The difference between the sport coat and suit coat is that one wears the suit as a set with matching pants. Suits are also more formal than sport coat ensembles. Blazers and sport coats are mixed and matched with contrasting dress slacks or trousers, thus giving the outfit a more relaxed and casual look.

Occasions to Wear a Sport Coat.

Sport Coats are very versatile and can be worn for many different occasions such as:

Business casual work days, social occasions, country clubs, social functions, business meetings, networking events, church/synagogue/temple/mosque and other religious ceremonies, as well as a Friday or Saturday night out, or at your favorite restaurant. A sport coat or blazer will serve you well.

It is a good idea to keep a sport coat hanging in your office for those unexpected business meetings or to throw on for a nice dinner after work. With a good quality sport jacket, you will never be under-dressed and are always prepared!

Which Colors and Fabrics Are Best?

Blazers

Blazers are solid in color and may have gold, silver, pewter, or metal buttons.

Everyone has his or her unique personal coloration. Choose colors that flatter your complexion, hair color, eye color and skin tone. A Navy Blazer is a cornerstone piece in a gentleman’s wardrobe. Navy bears a subliminal message that exudes trust and credibility. There are many other Blazer colors to choose from, such as Black, Charcoal, Tan, Brown, Camel, and Hunter Green. The key is to contrast them with a pair of lighter or darker dress slacks. For a sportier look, wear your Blazer with chinos, corduroys, or jeans.

Sport Coats

Sport coats, constructed in textured fabrics, are smart looking as well as multi-purpose. The most popular patterns are tweeds, herringbones, houndstooth, checks, and plaids. Some sport coats are solid colored, but most are bi, tri, or multi-colored with a prominent color base. Multi-colored patterns are easy to match up with many colors of dress slacks. Pants can match either the base color or accent color in the pattern.
