Transitioning Away From Summer to Fall

“Falling away” from Summer

By Janine Giorgenti

Like a light switch we have gone from summer to fall. Many of us are in denial that the cold weather is coming and have not – yet – switched our wardrobes from summer to fall clothing. For most of us this is a dreaded task.

Many of us have a closet stuffed with clothes, yet struggle with what to wear. This leads to wearing the same clothes over and over again.

Here are a few tips to help you escape the madness and turn your closet into into a friendly environment:

1.  I know this sounds crazy but pull everything out of your closet.

Yes, discard the clothes that you have not worn for three years. Odds are you will never wear them again.

2. Discard clothes that don’t fit.

We all think we will fit into them again. I hate to break it to you, but most likely you won’t. Even if you do, it may not be a comfortable fit.

3. Ditch clothes that are in poor condition, discolored, moth eaten, or frayed.

They just take up space and will give you a poor image.

4. Make a pile of summer clothes and fall winter clothes.

This will help you get organized. Make a pile of your summer clothes, to be stored – separately – till April.  Wash them before storing them, if need be.

5. Organize your clothes in groups.

Make groups for your dress slacks, jeans, sport coats, dress shirts, suits, sweaters, etc.

6. Get rid of accessories – like belts – that you will never wear, ties that are dated, and shoes that are beyond repair.

Bonus – How to make your closet into a friendly (and more productive) environment.

The key is to color coordinate everything.

For example; sort all the white shirts together, follow suit with all your other clothing items (all the blue items together, gray items together, and all other colors together). This way, you will be able to coordinate and mix and match your outfits with ease and have everything at your finger tips.

Finally a closet full of clothes and everything to wear!
